Nkata

I intend to create visual text as a response to my experience in the archive. My reflections are on looking at the objects created by unknown artisans. Archives have institutionalized material culture now inaccessible to us. Every object is of value and we should not be subjected to make a selection of what should be preserved or what should be restituted. I am interested in the nkata, the base on which the pots rest. The round-shaped nkata is made from different materials  - cloth, bark, woven grass - and may sometimes be intricately decorated. My interest is in the importance of this overlooked object in the everyday lives of women in rural areas.
