Deur Die Venster se Diefwering

The painting depicts a paradise with two scarlet ibises in the foreground. In response to van Wyk’s painting African Rhythms, my work posits that although dreams, rituals and myths can be reimagined to portray an idealised ‘authentic’ African identity, in reality, this too is a myth. The work differs from van Wyk’s painting in that the painting is devoid of people. The traces of human existence can be found in the objects surrounding the scene and burglar bars obstructing access to this idealised natural world.
