The drawings, initially developed during a 2018 summer residency facilitated by 16/16, have been waiting for their moment. Consider them two-dimensional studies for new sculptural works that the artist began making after an enriching participation at the Harmattan Workshop series led by legendary modernist artist Bruce Onobrakpeya.
These pieces were first presented at the 2023 FNB Joburg Art Fair, and each drawing serves as the spatial and narrative foundation for the corresponding sculptural work- titled Matters of Space and Time- which are themselves three-dimensional manifestations of these maps.
Yadichinma's artistic journey delves into both the profound and the granular. Rooted in concepts of space and time, her work is a tactile record of marks and imprints. Through scratching, shaping, and chipping away, she explores how material transforms over time, acquiring character and form.
The language system found on this piece not only reflects her interest in mark-making; it is also an homage to ancient African scripts like the Nsibidi script of her Igbo heritage. This layer of the work builds universes in dialogue with her roots, providing a textured voice that resonates across time and space. In a deeper sense, it reimagines the very concept of an artifact in the contemporary era.
