Nel Gallery | In die Kaap / In the Cape: Evocations of time and place, by Erna Groenewald
Nel Gallery is pleased to present In die Kaap / In the Cape: Evocations of time and place, by Erna Groenewald.
Visual art in conversation with musical art and poetry. This best describes In Die Kaap / In the Cape, which is both the title of the artworks on the walls and the new album and book of lyrics/poetry released by the folk music band Die Kaalkop Waarheid (The Bald-headed Truth)
The visual art is by Erna Groenewald, who has exhibited at Nel gallery on a number of group exhibitions. This will be the first time we work on a much larger showcasing of her work.
Each piece consisted of some digital printing (of old maps of the Cape) on Fabriano and then the artist meticulously renders the haunting landscapes of the Cape, in charcoal, lending a very sensuous quality to the work. Lastly, she embellishes each piece by introducing fine embroidery which helps t expand the narratives the works are about.
Each artwork accompanies a song, which can be listened to via an Application and a code which may be scanned next to each artwork. We aim for an immersive experience when visiting this exhibition.
