Salgado is no stranger to leaning into a sense of drama to emphasise emotion, and his nod to Vladimir Nabokov’s intense and somewhat chaotic style is both unsettling and visually delightful – and there is no doubt it sparks scrutiny.
In the eponymous novel, Nabokov follows the hapless tale of Albinus, a married art critic who falls in love with the teenage Margot. It’s a tragi-comedy with a romantic and turbulent storyline and Salgado’s deeply emotional and intense rendering reflects much of the original story’s colour, pace, and complex plot twists beautifully.
Laughter in the Dark is emotionally dark but it is also uplifting and so full of energy and seems reflective of the fact that there is never a dull moment in Andrew Salgado’s world - and for that, we are enormously grateful.
