Richard ‘Specs’ Ndimande investigates the relationship between freedom and responsibility - specifically across a generational divide. In regards to Goat Head (2020), Ndimande says, “The hammer can force a nail into the wall, it can also remove it [with the peen]. However, it cannot fix the hole. The hammer was originally his father’s. It represents a life of work and a relationship to manual labour. In constructing his own identity, Ndimande asked himself, “Am I a modified continuation of my father?”. The piece evokes a larger societal question about the onus on the youth for repairing their forebears' faults.
