The Dutch master painted over forty self-portraits and this piece, in New York’s Metropolitan Museum, holds a special place for Smit. “Whenever I am in a museum and there is a Rembrandt to see, that is my top priority; the application of paint is rather remarkable, and he loved to use vermillion which is a favourite colour of mine”.
