Gracefully Gone is informed by one of the historic ceramic tile designs found in Andalusia, Spain, where I'm currently based.
The painterly approach, the building up of the image through thin layers and glazes, and leaving some layers bare to expose the underpainting, aims to create an awareness of loss; loss that happens as passage of time, as can be seen in the old and chipped ceramic tiles of Andalusia, as well as the loss that happens during the painting process itself when initial layers get covered up.
This work is a celebration of the "imperfect" and the "unfinished". Through the imagery of disrupted repeated pattern, it embraces the beauty and significance of the painting process itself.
